Schlieren

The experimental factory Stahl- & Traumfabrik AG — with its carpentry, locksmith workshop, and shared pool of craft expertise — has been a fixture of Zurich’s productive and cultural landscape since the 1990s. In its early years in Zurich-Altstetten, readings, concerts, and cultural events of all kinds unfolded amid film sets, furniture prototypes, construction experiments, sculptures, and material archives.

Since 2020, production has relocated to the protected former drying plant at Bernstrasse 29 in Schlieren, carrying with it the ambition to cultivate this same culture in a new setting. In collaboration with Pfeffermint AG and Architecture Land Initiative, a project was initiated to open the site to other companies, practices, creative workers, craftspeople, and production facilities. The aim is to develop a place that grows in synergy with its productive environment — while engaging meaningfully with the rapid transformation of its surroundings.

Phasing

The project envisions the reuse and activation of the site across several phases. As a first step, structural remnants and contaminated traces of recent decades are carefully dismantled to prepare the ground for the site’s long-term use. Targeted refurbishment and renewal then restore the architectural, functional, and heritage qualities of the existing building stock.

The first phase of new construction introduces large, multi-story commercial volumes along the southern edge of the site — conceived as a flexible, open framework for workshops and small-scale production. Generous outdoor spaces and connecting pathways weave the new structures into the existing fabric, creating shared thresholds between individual workshops. The existing buildings become integral parts of a communal ensemble oriented around production, craft, and innovation.

The second phase places a volumetrically prominent structure along the street edge, marking an urban accent toward the Limmat. In its overall scale, the project enters into a careful dialogue with the adjacent Gaswerk complex, the workers’ houses to the east, and the employee housing to the west — both dating to the 1910s.

Vision

Through the careful restoration and modernization of the existing building substance — combined with the use of largely demountable components and renewable materials — the project advances an alternative and sustainable approach to design and construction. This ambition is pursued through a synergy of local resources and innovative technologies, drawing on the craftsmanship and hybrid production expertise already rooted in the site.

The social dimension of production forms a central aspect of the project. Oriented around communal values in both making and management, the ensemble — comprising the preserved substance of the former drying plant and the newly constructed halls — supports an alternative socio-economic and production model grounded in collaboration and shared use.
